What Does ACCET Reaccreditation Mean for ILI Students?
Choosing a language school or teacher training program is an investment—not only of money, but of your time and effort. If you’re looking for accredited English classes in Northampton, MA, you want to know that the school you choose takes your education as seriously as you do.
ACCET reaccreditation provides an independent measure of that quality. An outside team of evaluators took a close look at ILI, including our classrooms, instructors, curriculum, student services, facilities, and institutional operations.
At the end of that review, the ACCET team identified 15 strengths and no weaknesses.
For you as a student, that means there is an independent organization looking beyond what ILI says about itself and evaluating what actually happens here.
What Did ACCET See at ILI?

Some of the most meaningful findings in the ACCET report are things our students experience every day.
During classroom observations, evaluators found ILI’s classes to be learner-centered, with students consistently engaged in lessons and interacting with one another. They also highlighted the strong relationships and rapport instructors have built with students.
That matters because learning a language requires participation. You need opportunities to speak, ask questions, make mistakes, practice with others, and feel comfortable enough to keep trying.
ACCET also recognized ILI’s highly qualified instructors, many of whom hold master’s and other advanced degrees, as well as the ongoing training and professional development teachers receive. Evaluators connected that preparation and support with the quality of instruction they observed in ILI classrooms.
In other words, when you come to ILI, you’re not simply signing up for a class. You’re learning from teachers who are also continually learning, developing, and refining how they teach.
Support That Continues Beyond the Classroom
Sometimes an extra conversation, explanation, or opportunity to practice can make all the difference.
ACCET highlighted ILI’s Volunteer Tutoring Program, which provides free tutoring to students who need additional practice. Tutors are carefully vetted and observe ILI instructors before beginning their work with students.
Evaluators also recognized ILI’s scholarship support for students in the Free English Program, one of the ways ILI helps provide access to free English classes for immigrants and refugees in our community.
These programs reflect something important about the ILI experience: learning doesn’t necessarily stop when class ends. When students need additional support, we want them to have opportunities to keep practicing and progressing.
A Learning Environment Designed With Students in Mind

ACCET recognized ILI’s recent facility renovations, including a large area dedicated to student activities and engagement, as evidence of the Institute’s commitment to creating clean, modern spaces and an exceptional learning environment.
The report also highlighted the introduction of custom textbooks for Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 and ILI’s continued development of in-house materials as examples of its commitment to keeping educational materials current and responding to changing student needs. Students interested in Spanish can learn more about Spanish classes at ILI.
There’s even a small detail in the report that we think says something meaningful about the ILI community: one member of ILI’s Board of Directors is enrolled in an evening Spanish class.
In other words, the student experience isn’t something our leadership only hears about in reports. Members of our community experience ILI as learners, too.
One Standard of Quality, Whatever Your Goal
ILI’s ACCET accreditation covers the breadth of our educational programming:
And students are following through on those goals. The ACCET report found a 94.3% overall completion rate across ILI’s Free English, Intensive English, TESOL, and World Language programs combined.
Behind that number are individual students, each with their own reason for coming to ILI and their own definition of success.

We are especially proud that the accreditation recognizes such a broad range of ILI programs—from free English classes for immigrants and refugees to world languages, teacher training, workplace programs, and intensive and part-time English.”

That commitment is also reflected in ACCET’s observations. The evaluation team described communication at ILI as contributing to a “safe and productive learning environment” and recognized the welcoming environment created through the work of instructional supervisors and teachers.
To our teachers, who bring patience, knowledge, and creativity to every lesson, and to our staff, who support students throughout their experience: thank you.

More Than Four Decades of Language Education in Northampton and Beyond
ILI has been accredited by ACCET since 1984, the same year the Institute was founded.
For more than four decades, students have come to ILI with different languages, backgrounds, professions, and goals. What connects them is the desire to learn something that can open a door—to a conversation, a career, a community, a journey, or an entirely new way of seeing the world.
Reaccreditation gives us an opportunity to celebrate how far ILI has come. More importantly, it reinforces our responsibility to keep moving forward.
ACCET expressed confidence that ILI will continue to “review, monitor, and enhance its operations” to maintain high-quality education and training.
We don’t see accreditation as a finish line. We see it as a promise to keep listening, learning, improving, and putting students first.
