An ILI Approach to Language Learning
At the International Language Institute of Massachusetts, we believe that learning a language is about more than memorizing vocabulary and grammar rules. It’s about connecting with people, exploring cultures, and building the confidence to communicate in the real world. That’s why we’re excited to share an updated approach to our World Language Program that combines the best of both worlds: Core Classes and Elective Classes.
Building a Strong Foundation with Core Language Classes

Our Core Classes provide the foundation students need to progress confidently from beginner to advanced levels. Organized into nine levels aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), these courses focus on the essential building blocks of language learning: grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and communication skills. Students learn level-appropriate language structures and then have plenty of opportunities to practice and apply what they learn through interactive activities and real-world communication tasks.
Students frequently comment on the supportive and engaging classroom environment that helps them build confidence as they progress. As one student shared:
“The teacher exemplifies the best in teaching, combining consistent practice, repetition, visuals, games, activities, peer learning and humor. The workbook has been a wonderful reference.”
In other words, core courses help you build your language foundation. Elective courses help you apply what you’ve learned while growing your vocabulary, confidence, and fluency through topics that interest you.
Developing Fluency Through Elective Classes
At the same time, we know that fluency develops through meaningful use of the language. That’s where our Elective Classes come in. Rather than introducing large amounts of new grammar, these courses help students become more comfortable and spontaneous using the language they have already learned. Through engaging topics such as film, music, literature, travel, food, current events, and culture, students expand their vocabulary, deepen their cultural understanding, and gain confidence expressing themselves in authentic conversations.
Many students find that these courses allow them to explore complex ideas and cultural perspectives while continuing to strengthen their language skills. As one student in our Spanish Sin Traducir course reflected:
“I especially love learning about culture and politics in other parts of the world. In this way, we learn so much more than Spanish. At the same time as we struggle with having conversations in Spanish, we have the opportunity to learn facts, and grapple with complex ideas and histories.”

For example, a Spanish student might take a Core Class such as Spanish Level 7 to strengthen their communication skills while also enrolling in an elective such as Between Reality and Fantasy: Short Stories from the Spanish-Speaking World or Cinema and TV Series in Spanish. In French, students can explore electives such as La Francophonie or French film and culture courses that provide opportunities to use the language in meaningful, real-world contexts.
Think of it this way: Core Classes teach you the chords, while Elective Classes help you play the song.
We’ve already implemented this approach in our Spanish program and have seen how much students enjoy combining structured learning with conversation and culture. We’re now starting to expand this model to our French and Italian classes as well.
Language Learning Beyond the Classroom
We’re also extending language learning beyond the classroom. Beginning this year, ILI will offer a series of cultural events designed to bring together students, alumni, language enthusiasts, and community members. These events will celebrate the cultures connected to the languages we teach while creating new opportunities for conversation, connection, and intercultural exchange. Whether it’s a film screening, cultural presentation, tasting event, or community gathering, our goal is to create welcoming spaces where people can learn, share experiences, and build new friendships.

One example was our recent Evening of Brazilian Music, which brought together students, staff, and community members to learn about the history and cultural significance of Brazilian music while enjoying live performances and conversation. One attendee later described the event as “a real demonstration of building community and a reflection of our mission to enhance cultural understanding.”
Future events will continue to celebrate the cultures connected to the languages we teach and create opportunities for authentic language practice outside the classroom.
A Community for Lifelong Language Learners
At ILI, language learning has always been about community as much as communication. We hope these new classes and events will make it even easier for students to practice their skills, explore the world, and feel connected to others who share their curiosity and passion for languages.
Whether your goal is to travel, connect with family, advance your career, or simply enjoy learning something new, our updated curriculum offers a clear pathway to both accuracy and fluency—and a community to support you along the way.
Whether you’re looking for Spanish, French, Italian, or English classes, ILI’s combination of Core Classes, Elective Classes, and cultural events offers adult learners a supportive and engaging path toward real-world communication and cultural understanding.
