There are many great reasons to develop your ability to teach English to speakers of other languages (TESOL), and as you’d expect, whatever your motivation, we’re big fans. For you, it might come from a desire for a life change, the need to give something back to the community at home or overseas, a calling towards teaching others, an interest in the English language, or a whole host of other reasons!
Moving from that aspiration to teach, to actually choosing the right TESOL program and committing to it, is quite a big step.
If you’re there right now, the chances are you’re sitting with a bunch of questions and uncertainties. Before taking a big leap like this, we want to make sure you know where you’re going to land – which is hopefully on your feet, hitting the ground running, with a big smile on your face.
We’re going to look at some of the TESOL certificate programs on offer, but we’re also going to consider the importance of the learning environment and community too. Let’s do it.
What to Look for When Choosing a TESOL Program
Let’s start with the course itself. According to Macey Faiella, ILI’s director of English Programs, one of the earliest considerations is often around the format of the course, and how you’re going to fit the TESOL program into your life – so it’s a question of duration, hours per week, total number of weeks, that kind of thing.
You might be of the mindset that you want to ‘get it done’ as soon as possible so you can start teaching and earning as soon as possible. But you might prefer to go part-time and fit your TESOL program around other commitments, so a center that has different options is not a bad place to start.
But Macey explains that, in actual fact, whatever course format you’re going to follow, it’s going to be an intensive experience. And that’s true. For shorter, more intensive TESOL programs, there’s a chance you’ll be able to put your life on hold while you take the course. For part-time TESOL programs that expand out over several weeks or even months, the likelihood is that you’ll be juggling coursework and preparation with the rest of your life priorities.
Another important consideration is who will be training you. A TESOL certificate is only as strong as the expertise behind it. At ILI, our TESOL Certificate Course is taught by a teacher trainer certified by World Learning/SIT Graduate Institute. Developed by SIT Graduate Institute and offered globally, this approach to teacher education emphasizes hands-on teaching practice, learner-centered methodologies, and reflective teaching techniques. Rather than focusing solely on theory, trainees learn by doing, receiving feedback, and continually refining their teaching skills in real classroom environments.
Mm, so if the process is going to be a busy one anyway, let’s look at why this is so, and what might help to keep things more manageable. Well, not all learning environments are the same, so let’s look at that.
Why Community Matters in TESOL Teacher Training
It goes without saying that you want to find a TESOL course provider where the atmosphere is conducive to learning. But there’s a nuance that’s important here when we dive deeper into what it’s like to learn during a TESOL program, and it relates to the importance of the learning community.
Learning to teach English is quite an incredible process. Within a very short space of time, you’re going to transition from being able to speak English having potentially spent most or a good part of your life speaking it, to someone able to stand up in front of a class of English language learners, and teach them how to do it.
And that is not something that happens all at once.
Learning to teach English involves you learning new skills which will include presentation skills, grammar knowledge, pedagogical theories and approaches, classroom management techniques, (very) active listening and a whole lot more.
This makes a TESOL course super-exciting and you pick up so many transferable skills, but before you get it all right, you’re going to get some things wrong. It sometimes takes trial and error, reflection, and moments of uncertainty along the way.
You can feel quite vulnerable at times, and that’s very much part of the process. Fact is, the more you’ve already advanced through life, the less you’ll probably be accustomed to standing up in front of a group of people you’ve only just got to know, teaching a topic you’ve only just learned!
And precisely this is why the learning community matters. And we have to say that at ILI, we’ve really got something special going on, which our TESOL students in particular really relish.
It’s about the way we set up the ground rules, the way we support each other, and, honestly, the way we genuinely look out for each other here. Knowing that everyone in the room – including our amazing practice students – has your back, is a pure delight. So when you make a mistake – because hey, that’s how you learn – you stay calm, you carry it lightly, you move on and everyone is happy.
Whether your new TESOL community is with you face-to-face or virtually because you’re studying online, that group of fellow TESOL students will be your safe space where you can compare approaches, watch and learn from each other, and find different ways to deal with the personal challenges you might encounter on the journey.
Think we’re overstating it?
“I can’t imagine a better course. I can confidently say I learned more in these four weeks than in any class I’ve ever taken.”
Michaela

Studying TESOL in the right place
For those who choose to study TESOL in person, the geographical place you choose can also quietly influence the experience you have. Learning in a place that has been shaped by education can certainly help get you into the swing of things as you get started on your TESOL course.
Now we’re biased here, but we think that one really good option to consider is leaving your neighborhood behind for the duration of your TESOL program, especially if you live in a big city like Boston or New York.
We’re based in Northampton, Massachusetts which has long been connected to higher education and language learning. That doesn’t give Northampton an austere academic character, more of an interested-in-people, bookish, thoughtful and chilled vibe – the place has a calm confidence to it. Downtown is big enough to have everything you need, but small enough to get around quickly. You have nature on your doorstep, so an early-morning run by the river is totally possible (and highly recommended).

Flexibility in TESOL Programs
As mentioned, there are different formats to choose from.
TESOL programs have adapted over time to adjust to the need for different pacing and format options. You might already know whether you prefer the immersion of an intensive course, or need a longer timeline that allows you to study alongside other obligations. Online formats can also make TESOL training possible for you if you cannot attend classes in person.
What’s good to know is that while learning options vary, the content and the feel of the program does not change, just how learning fits into your life. Choosing a format that aligns with your personal circumstances can make it easier to stay engaged and present throughout the course. Let us know if you need help choosing.
Learning TESOL Online or In Person at ILI
The International Language Institute (ILI) offers two TESOL certificate courses, each with a different schedule and delivery format.
Both TESOL certificate options follow the same accredited curriculum and are taught by a teacher trainer certified through World Learning/SIT Graduate Institute. The program incorporates learner-centered methodologies, reflective teaching practices, and extensive hands-on teaching experience, helping trainees develop practical skills that can be applied immediately in the classroom.
The Intensive Teacher Training Course (TESOL Certificate) is a four-week program that may be completed online or in person in Northampton, Massachusetts. This option is suited to students who are able to commit focused time to their training over a shorter period.
The Part-time Teacher Training Course (TESOL Certificate) follows the same core curriculum over a longer timeframe and is delivered entirely online over 15 weeks. This format allows students to complete the course while balancing other responsibilities.
Both options provide structured TESOL training, with pacing and format as the main differences between them.
Choosing the Right TESOL Program for You
Choosing a TESOL program often involves listening carefully to your own needs and circumstances. Some people thrive in a concentrated learning environment, while others prefer a steadier pace. Some feel more comfortable learning face to face, while others appreciate the flexibility of studying online. We’re advocating a chilled location with a positive and friendly learning community, but that’s just our view, and yours might be different.
Taking time to reflect on how you learn best, what kind of support helps you stay engaged, and how a course fits into your daily life can help guide the decision. This is an approach reflected in how TESOL training is structured at ILI. There is no single right choice, only the option that feels most sustainable and supportive for where you are now.
A TESOL program should feel like a place where learning can happen thoughtfully and with confidence. By focusing on environment, community, and flexibility, we hope you’ll be able to choose a path that supports your training experience and allows you to grow into the work at your own pace.
