Why do we group Academic English programs and Business English programs together?
Great question! Whether you’re at a community college, an Ivy-league university, a startup company, or a fortune 500 corporation, you need to get serious about which kinds of English are effective and appropriate.
The English you use in the classroom and the boardroom differs from the English you use in the dorm room and the living room. Academic English and Business English emphasize different structures, different vocabulary, and different levels of formality than everyday English. You cannot rely on the English you picked up from movies, high school classes, and general ESL courses.
Customized to your needs and interests, our online and in-person courses cover the most important features that are shared by both Academic and Business English, such as degrees of formality in written and spoken communication, impactful vocabulary, parallel sentence structures, and conventions of organizing, formatting, and editing essays and presentations.
How is Academic English different from Business English?
Another great question. It’s complicated!
Academic writing, for example, is formal and objective. This means you use facts and reasoning to back up an original argument – also called a “thesis” – and you avoid fluff like “I think” and “I feel.” In contrast, during a job or college interview, the Business English you use may be formal but also personal.
A professional yet friendly approach shows off your “soft skills,” core values, and unique individual qualities. In Advanced Conversation, you expand your levels of formality and informality, deepen your interpersonal and intercultural skills, and broaden your range of idiomatic expressions, creating a great impression on whoever you meet, wherever you go.
Ultimately, unlike the everyday English that you use at home or play with friends and family, Academic and Business English is the language you use at school or work to communicate complex ideas and build professional relationships. So, because Academic and Business English share so many similarities, we group them together by writing or speaking skills into the Academic and Business Writing English course, the Job and College Interview course, and the Advanced Conversation course.
