Advanced Italian Courses: Definition

An advanced Italian course is one that starts by assuming you already have a high level of competency in the Italian language.

You should feel at home in the class if:

  • you have a full grasp of Italian grammar and you can express yourself easily across the different tenses
  • you have a good general vocabulary in Italian
  • you can speak on a range of everyday subjects with relative ease
  • you a comfortable reading and writing Italian

You may have completed advanced Italian courses in the past, because when you get to an advanced level, it’s all about recycling and retaining what you have learned, discovering new vocabulary and expressing yourself with more and more accuracy.

Check out our Italian levels, and see what level you really are.

What is there to learn in an Advanced Italian Class?

It’s a fair question. If you’re at an advanced level of Italian, you have good self-awareness of what it is to learn a language. You know it doesn’t really ever end, and that there’s always more to discover.

Also, if you learned your Italian, or you’ve been living outside Italy for any length of time, you might be really surprised to discover how the Italian language has evolved. The digital world, plus each new generation has introduced hundreds of new and very commonplace Italian words. This is just one thing we can explore together on an Advanced Italian course.

Don’t forget that both in our Italian classes in Massachusetts, USA, our online Italian classes and the study abroad options in Italy, we can provide both general Italian language classes and specialist, one-on-one custom classes if there is an area of Italian you particularly need to focus on.

Who will be in an Advanced Italian Class with me?

It is true to say that there is likely to be a wider range of Italian levels in and advanced group, because as an advanced Italian speaker, you will have picked up speaking and listening skills, grammar and vocabulary knowledge from diverse places and your learning pathway will be very different from the others in the group.

But that is definitely an advantage at this level, because not only will you have the constant, careful correction of your Italian teacher, but you’ll also pick up new expressions and approaches from your classmates.

At an advanced level, most of the structured learning gives way to advanced vocabulary and idiomatic phrases, reminders and corrections, and a big emphasis on fluency.

While your teacher will have a plan for each lesson, it’s more common at an Advanced Italian level to follow tangents, go with the flow and find yourselves in new linguistic territory, just like you might do sitting in a caffetteria in the heart of Rome!

I used to speak Italian fluently, but I’ve lost that now. Am I still advanced?

We can tell you that. If you are on the point of booking but unsure where you fit in, please get in touch with us and we’ll book you in for a speaking assessment. You’ll chat briefly to one of our Italian teachers, who will make a recommendation on where you should restart your Italian lessons.

Can I take any format of Italian course at ILI Northampton at advanced level?

Yes we can generally accommodate advanced Italian speakers in most of our formats, but if a specific format you are looking for is unavailable at your level (e.g. the group is full already), we can always offer you one-on-one lessons to get you back learning as soon as possible. One option to really consider as an advanced Italian speaker is to study Italian abroad. At your level of Italian you will be able to make the most of your high level of language skill, to absorb language inside and outside the classroom, and converse in a wide range of situations.

We generally use Zoom for our online language classes, as it is widely available and the functionality works well for the way we teach. If you are booking language classes online for your company, and you use a different platform (e.g. Google Meet, Microsoft Teams), we will be able to adjust our delivery to fit in with you.

You will meet people from around the world with a variety of backgrounds in your online class. You will practice everything you would in an in-person class: speaking, listening, reading, grammar, pronunciation, and writing. If you are in a group language class, you will have many opportunities to practice speaking with your classmates one-on-one and in small groups.

  • Having a hard copy of your class book can be a real help. You can pick one up at our school in Northampton. Just give us a heads up when you can drop by so that we have one ready for you.
  • Take a little time before class to get your online learning environment ready. We recommend having good lighting and being within 2-3 feet of your computer camera. This way the teacher and other students can have a more visual feel for how students are reacting to lessons and activities. Have a notebook and something to write with.
  • Read the 7 Strategies for Success in your ILI workbook.
  • We always recommend that students take a little time before and or after your class to review the lessons.
