About Julie Asbornsen
Julie Asbornsen serves as the Controller at ILI. For the past ten years, Julie has worked as a self-employed accounting specialist and bookkeeper for several arts and social justice nonprofits in the Pioneer Valley of Massachusetts. Prior to that, she wrote math textbook materials for educational publishers and had a brief stint as a high school math teacher (she describes teaching as the toughest job she ever had). Although she majored in Sociology at Harvard University, she has always had an affinity for numbers, and has worked in math-related fields throughout her career. Julie believes that clear communication and efficient processes are key components of any successful organization. She is thrilled to work for ILI, a people-centered nonprofit whose goals she shares.
Julie has lived in Northampton, MA since 1997 and raised two children in the city with her spouse, Lars. Her children have traveled extensively and participated in international youth social justice programs — the importance of connecting with others who are different from oneself is a part of her family’s ethos. Outside of work, she enjoys hiking with her two dogs and spending time in beautiful natural places, including the Adirondack mountains.
