If you’re an international student of English or American culture, and you’re looking for an authentic American experience where you’ll feel particularly safe and welcome, or just a great place to learn English and progress in life, we think you’re going to love Northampton in Massachusetts, USA.
Sure, you might not have heard of Northampton – you might instead be dazzled by places like Boston, New York, San Francisco, San Diego,… the big cities with the big lights, but also with big volumes of tourism.
Now don’t get me wrong, we all love being the tourist sometimes, and of course, studying English in the USA is only part of the reason to travel there.
The problem is that the bigger the place, the more you’re just a number, and the harder you’ll possibly find it to really get to know actual Americans, practice your English with them, or just relax into being your authentic self, abroad.
By contrast, a smaller town gives you a more real taste of US life. It makes sense from a language learning perspective to head for those places with a little less international tourism. For international students considering an Intensive English Program in Massachusetts, Northampton offers the perfect mix of small-town charm and accessibility to larger cities.
You can also use your weekends to travel to the bigger cities, like so many Americans do – and places like New York City and Boston are great weekend destinations from the town.
So let’s take a closer look at Northampton.
The Northampton Advantage
More Connection
I’ve visited New York twice, and Northampton twice too. I probably talked to more people in the space of a couple of hours in the street, in stores and coffee shops in Northampton than I did in a week in New York.
It’s just a totally different vibe. Sure, the energy is amazing in New York – it’s very dynamic and the pace of life is frenetic. And while that carries you along for a while, if you’re not used to it, you go home and feel like you need a holiday afterwards.
Not the case in Northampton – you get the same kind of intensive English program for international students in the USA in a number of different places, but step outside, and the vibe here is chilled.
So much to do in the evenings
That doesn’t make it a sleepy place though. That’s probably a common misconception. In fact, I went out more in the evenings in Northampton than in New York. In terms of cost, it’s a lot cheaper going out in a small town like Northampton, but it’s also friendlier, and there is a lot on.
People in Northampton and the Connecticut River Valley love their music, and it seems there are concerts on every night of the week.
Sure, you might need to hire a car or team up with a driver, but that also feels very possible. If you’re staying with a homestay provider, there’s a very good chance they’ll want to take you out with them to whatever gig they’re going to. That was certainly my experience.
Amazing seasonal differences
Both times I went to Northampton were in the winter. It gets dark early and it can be quite cold, with snow in the winter. That might not be for everyone, but what is lost in daylight is more than made up for with good spirits, warm and cosy diners and bars, very warm welcomes and the friendliest of people.
The summer brings hot days and warm evenings, and the local community spends its time outside, whether that’s hiking in the hills and river activities, or at the regional festivals, local cultural events and, of course, endless music events.
Democratic, welcoming and inclusive
In the 2024 presidential elections, Massachusetts was in the top 5 most democrat-voting states, along with places like Vermont (up the road from Massachusetts), California, Maryland and Hawaii. And within Massachusetts, Northampton was again in the top 5, with around 90% of the vote being for democrat, socialist or green parties.
Now, I don’t want to get too political here on ILI’s blog, but that speaks volumes in support of the welcome international students receive when they come to study English in the USA.
That doesn’t mean for one moment that republican-voting areas are necessarily less welcoming, but I do think that in Northampton, it’s reflective of how open and interested people are in you when you’re from out of town, and how happy they are to help you out.
Access to Worldly-Wise Education
Northampton, and Massachusetts in general, is known for its positive attitude towards education. According to 2022 Census information, across the USA, 37.7% of adults hold a bachelor’s degree. The state average for Massachusetts is 45.9%, the county average is 50.4% but in Northampton 62.9% of residents hold a bachelor’s degree.

Beautiful Natural Surroundings and great food!
The Connecticut River Valley is famous for its fertile soils and productive farming. That includes fruit crops like apples, pears, peaches and plums, raspberries, strawberries and blueberries. They also grow a lot of sweetcorn, asparagus, squash and pumpkins.
Let’s also please not forget maple syrup which is amazing here.
If you come at the right time of year, you can visit pick-your-own farms here, and pretty much any time head to the farm stands to pick up cider, Maple syrup and other locally made specialties.
As you can imagine, this means the landscape is pretty special. The highest point nearby is Mount Nonotuck which is at 252metres. That’s not super high, but it’s very scenic with amazing views of the Connecticut River and beyond.
And if I’m giving you the impression that it’s all very laid back and sleepy, you can be super active here too. That could be hiking and walking, biking and kayaking, fishing, birdwatching, skiing and snowshoeing in winter, rock climbing, camping, boating and paddleboarding, disc golf or horseback riding. When you’re on your Intensive English Program, speak to the activity coordinator and tell them what you’re interested in. They’ll definitely be able to point you in the right direction, and maybe even hook you up with someone they know to get you started.
Specific Benefits of Northampton IEP Programs Offered by ILI
Small Class Sizes
The school is small and personal by design. You’ll get to know lots of people there, who will take the time to get to know you personally too. The small class sizes also give you lots of talking time in class, and personal attention from your teacher. It’s significantly faster to learn English in a small group than where you’re in a class with an average of 8 students.
Nationality mix
One of the most exciting aspects of studying at ILI is the incredibly diverse mix of students you’ll meet. The Intensive English Program brings together learners from all over the world—Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa—creating a truly global classroom experience. This diversity isn’t just great for making international friends; it also enriches your learning. You’ll be exposed to different accents, cultural perspectives, and ways of expressing ideas in English, making your language journey even more dynamic and engaging. Plus, with English as the common language among students, you’ll find yourself naturally practicing all day, both inside and outside the classroom!
Experienced and Dedicated Teachers
Being an English school in Massachusetts means taking the academic side of things very seriously. The staff are super dedicated and they work hard to make learning work for individual students.
Comprehensive Curriculum
As with all ACCET accredited schools, the Intensive English Language programs offered at ILI cover all aspects of English language education. That means you’ll always work on reading and writing skills, listening and speaking, vocabulary and grammar. What really makes a difference is how thoughtfully those skills are integrated into the extracurricular activities which are interesting, but also designed to help really practice those skills.
Supportive Student Services
If there’s one thing you notice when you walk through the door at ILI, it’s the strength of the welcome. That willingness to help carries through every aspect of the learning process. On the Intensive English Program for international students, you’re going to want to know about things like accommodation options, places to go and things to do which are particularly well-suited to students, but you may also need help with settling in and getting used to things. If you’re staying for longer, or even, if you’re moving to the US permanently and the intensive English program is part of you integrating into an English speaking community, the staff will also help you to negotiate the paperwork, get your visa sorted, and progress through to getting a job or studying at college or university!
