Our TESOL program reflects these values, creating a truly transformative experience for every participant. It will also prepare you mentally for stepping into a new cultural paradigm, which can be a huge factor in what makes teaching English abroad successful.

But first things first…

What Is the TESOL Certification?

A TESOL certification is an internationally recognized qualification that prepares you to teach English to speakers of other languages. There are many different organizations that offer the TESOL Certificate. Always look for programs that are accredited by an outside institution.  At ILI, the SIT TESOL Certificate is accredited by SIT Graduate Institute and administered by licensed training centers around the world. Our course is also accredited by ACCET (Accrediting Council of Continuing Education and Training). Founded in 1974 ACCET has been continuously recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a reliable authority on educational quality since 1978.

SIT TESOL Certificate

The SIT TESOL Certificate is a widely respected program designed for aspiring English language teachers who want a solid foundation in both teaching theory and practice. Developed by the School for International Training (SIT), this certification emphasizes experiential learning, equipping participants with the skills and confidence to teach English to speakers of other languages in diverse settings around the world. The hands-on approach, combined with reflective teaching practices, prepares graduates to meet the challenges of modern language education with creativity and cultural sensitivity.

Ongoing Program Modification and Professional Development

TESOL programs, including the one at ILI, are regularly updated to reflect changes in language teaching practices and the latest research in pedagogy. ILI’s curriculum follows the SIT TESOL Certificate guidelines from the TESOL International Association. These guidelines help programs maintain their relevance in an ever-changing educational landscape. This means that when you choose ILI’s TESOL course, you’re not only getting a solid foundation in teaching English, but also a program that adapts to new educational technologies, teaching strategies, and the demands of global classrooms.

When you complete a TESOL-certified course, you become part of a large, global network of English language teaching professionals. In addition, you can become a member of TESOL International Association. This organization offers members access to journals, webinars, and conferences, helping teachers stay connected and updated on the latest trends. This network is invaluable for job searching, career growth, and continuing education.

What Kind of Jobs Can You Expect After TESOL Certification?

Once you’ve earned your TESOL certification, you’ll have access to a wide range of teaching jobs. Here are a few common roles you might pursue:

  1. Private Language Schools
Many new TESOL graduates begin teaching in private language schools abroad. These schools are common in countries like South Korea, Japan, Vietnam and Mexico. You’ll typically teach both children and adults, and the demand for English teachers in these regions remains high. Many of these positions come with benefits such as housing and paid vacations, making them an attractive option for your first job. As ever, be prudent when securing work overseas. Ask lots of questions and check carefully exactly how much help the organization will give you prior to arrival and once you are on site. Check things like the average group size you’ll be teaching, whether everyone in your groups will have the same level of English, how far you’ll be traveling each day, how many hours per week you’ll be expected to teach and more. We’ll go through these and other questions on your TESOL course with us.
  2. International Schools
If you already have a bachelor’s degree or additional qualifications, you might consider teaching at international schools. These schools, often located in large cities around the world, follow American or British curriculums. They generally offer higher pay and more comprehensive benefits than private language schools. If you have other life experience including from teaching other subjects or consulting, you might find you’re asked to teach your major or career topic to students, through the medium of English. If you’re teaching non-native speakers, it will definitely always help to have the appreciation of English language acquisition you’ll have got from the TESOL certification.
  3. Teaching English Online
Online teaching has become increasingly popular, and as a TESOL-certified teacher, you’ll be qualified to teach English remotely. Companies, especially those based in China or Japan, are always looking for native speakers to help students practice their conversational English or improve their grammar. One word of caution though – don’t be tempted to sign up to platforms where, in order to compete, you’re expected to charge a few dollars per hour. Your English lessons, particularly at first, will take a lot of thought and preparation, and you deserve to be properly remunerated.
  4. Volunteer Teaching
If you’re looking for a meaningful experience, volunteering to teach English in underserved communities could be a great fit. Many organizations offer room and board in exchange for your teaching services, allowing you to immerse yourself in a new culture while making a difference. This aligns with ILI’s commitment to community service and making a positive impact through language education, so if you can afford to do this, it would be a great way to give back to the world.
You’ll also find a lot of travel companies that offer bite-sized teaching English experiences overseas, where they charge you almost like a regular holiday, for the opportunity to drop in on a community, teach them English for a couple of weeks, do some sightseeing and head home. If that’s all the time you have, then sure, it may help. But there is no substitute for really spending a good amount of time with a community, developing teacher-student relationships and getting the reward of seeing your students progress.

The Impact of Brexit on Teaching Opportunities in Europe

Brexit has significantly changed the landscape for British citizens looking to teach English in Europe. Before Brexit, UK citizens could work freely across the European Union (EU) with minimal paperwork, much like EU citizens. However, post-Brexit, UK citizens are now considered third-country nationals, meaning they must secure visas and work permits to teach in most EU countries, just like applicants from outside Europe, including the U.S. This has added layers of complexity for British teachers, making it somewhat harder for them to secure teaching positions in Europe.

For American teachers, the situation is somewhat similar but with a key difference: the process for obtaining a work visa is generally the same as it was pre-Brexit.

This means Americans and British teachers of English both need to go through a similar process to teach in the European Union.

We think this now means that American TESOL-certified teachers will find work as easily as UK teachers.

  2. More resilience for teaching overseas
The first few weeks of teaching overseas are definitely the hardest, where the place, the food, the people, the accommodation, the job, the classroom are all possibly very different from your life back home. However much of an international traveller you are, you’re not just checking into a hotel and going sightseeing, you’re going to be stepping into a new job where you have students looking to you for your teaching and communication skills. From day one, you’re also going to be a representative of the USA abroad, like a junior official of the US mission overseas! It’s great fun, but you’re likely to be out of your comfort zone for a while.

We’ll share our experience of teaching abroad and tell you all that we can about the culture of the countries you’re interested in teaching in. With any luck, we’ll be able to pair you up with one of our local students who originate from that country too. We’ll help you ease the transition and remove the stumbling blocks to ensure you’re as prepared as possible for your exciting TESOL job abroad!
  3. Hands-On, Real-World Learning
ILI’s TESOL program isn’t just about theory—it’s about giving you real-world experience. With the practicum, you’ll get the chance to observe classes, plan lessons, and teach real students, helping you gain confidence and competence before you step into your own classroom. And you’ll remember your first few practice lessons forever. They’re very special.
  4. Access to ILI’s Network and Resources
When you join ILI, you’re not just getting a TESOL certificate—you’re gaining access to a network of professionals who are there to support you throughout your career.

Many of our graduates continue to stay connected with ILI by volunteering with students in our free English program for immigrants and refugees. These students get additional English support and TESOL graduates continue to get valuable experience with hands-on teaching.
  5. Testimonials and Student Experience
One of the best ways to know what it’s like at ILI is to talk to current students and alumni. ILI encourages a supportive, open atmosphere, and many students are happy to share their experiences with you. Take the time to connect with others in the ILI community to get a true sense of what your future as a TESOL-certified teacher could be.
