Zeynep Dere receives Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee Scholarship

Zeynep Dere is the recipient of a scholarship established by Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee for area immigrants and refugees studying at the Northampton-based International Language Institute (ILI) of Massachusetts. The scholarship allows Dere to enroll in ILI’s intensive English program over the next year. Her application was chosen from many submitted by immigrants and refugees in the school’s free English evening classes for immigrants and refugees.

Dere, from Turkey, has been a student in the free English classes since 2015. When not busy with her family and school, she volunteers her time to raise funds for needy children, at one time for orphanages in Turkey and now in western Massachusetts. She lives in South Hadley with her husband and two young children.

“I am very excited,” Dere said. “This means I can study English more every week, and that is good for my family and me. Dean’s Beans is helping to make my dreams come true.”

Dean Cycon, founder/owner of Dean’s Beans, came up with the idea for the scholarship after learning about the school’s free English classes. “I wanted to make it possible for one of these hard-working students to benefit from more of the excellent instruction I witnessed at ILI,” Cycon said. “A scholarship seemed the best way to make that happen.”

“This is a perfect match,” said ILI Executive Director Caroline Gear. “We promote strong, diverse communities through high-quality language instruction, and Dean’s support of our efforts fits well with his company’s commitment to social activism. We thank him for this scholarship, the first at our school!”

Cycon founded Dean’s Beans in Orange, MA nearly 25 years ago. In 2013, he received the Oslo Business for Peace Award, also known as the “Nobel prize of business,” which honors socially responsible businesses who bring about positive change. More info. about Dean’s Beans Organic Coffee.

Students in ILI’s Intensive English Program visi Students in ILI’s Intensive English Program visited the Northampton Police station yesterday. Students asked Officer Lauren Bolduc questions about topics from animal control to traffic to violent crime to the job of a cop. The tour took us to every corner of the station from the detention center to the evidence room to Chief Jody D. Kasper in her office. Thanks NPD for an unforgettable experience. ⭐️

We had such an engaging afternoon at @parlorroommusic with ILI Board Member + former president of @gccgreenfield Bob Pura. Bob led a reading and discussion of his new book The Community’s College: The Pursuit of Democracy, Economic Development, and Success, which he co-wrote with Dr. Tara L. Parker. Audience members also got the chance to learn more about the process behind the creation of the book.

Today Bob Pura and Tara Parker read from and lead Today Bob Pura and Tara Parker read from and lead a discussion of their book The Community’s College: The Pursuit of Democracy, Economic Development, and Success! 📚 Join us at @parlorroommusic at 2pm.

In their book, The Community’s College: The Pursuit of Democracy, Economic Development, and Success, co-authors Dr. Robert L. Pura and Dr. Tara L. Parker explore the extraordinary impact of this country’s community colleges on people, communities, and our democratic traditions.

As the book’s foreword by Lynn Pasquerella, President of the American Association of Colleges and Universities, states: "[T]he analysis offered by Dr. Pura and Dr. Parker unveils how community colleges—distinctively American institutions—are more essential than ever to fulfilling our nation's historic mission of educating for democracy."

Pura, a member of the ILI board of directors, retired in 2018 as president of Greenfield Community College after 17+ years in that position. Parker is the recently appointed Dean of the College of Education and Human Development at UMass Boston.
