The First Meeting With a Student
Once you have been matched with a student, ILI’s Volunteer Tutor Coordinator, Laura Robinson, will share with you the student’s preferred method of contact. You can then reach out to the student to set up the first meeting. If your first contact is over the phone, our best advice is to be sure to ask your new student to repeat their understanding of the day, date, time and place of your first meeting. It’s also helpful to repeat your first name to them multiple times to make sure that they know who to look for if your first meeting is in-person. It can be helpful to send a brief reminder text or email the day before a meeting, especially in the beginning. The Volunteer Tutor Resource Manual has ideas for topics to discuss during the first meeting.
Teaching Resources
Resource materials are available for you to use if you choose to meet with your student at ILI. Since these materials are for common use, they cannot be removed from the school, but they can be used while you are working with a student. In addition, tutors receive access to an online collection of resources. The Volunteer Tutor Coordinator and staff are always available to help answer your questions about teaching materials and resources.
Tutoring Space
If you choose to tutor your student here at ILI, we have some classroom space available, especially in classroom 3. In order to use one of the classrooms without a time conflict, please sign up for the space in advance by speaking with the Volunteer Tutor Coordinator, Laura Robinson. We like to keep open communication as paid classes and meetings have priority over tutorials in certain rooms at certain times. When you finish using a space, please leave the room neat, turn the lights off and leave the door open when you leave.
Your Last Meeting With Your Student
If your volunteer tutor sessions are discontinued for any reason, please notify Laura Robinson (Laura@ili.edu) as soon as possible. If the sessions have ended because of logistics or frustrations, Laura will be happy to help smooth things out and get you back in communication with your student, or to set you up with a new student who is ready to learn! At the conclusion of a tutor’s period of service, volunteers are asked to complete an evaluation form about the tutoring experience.
